Explanation Writing

We recieved on email from a year 3/4 school in Pukekohe asking us, "how do bees make honey?" We knew that to answer this question we were going to have to research and complete a piece of explanation writing. We have been working hard on this piece of writing and have begun publishing these using Google Docs. Check out some of the writing we have created:

How do bees make honey?

Bees are insects. Bees are the only animals that make honey. They collect the nectar from flowers.

Nectar is like sweet water. When they collect the nectar from flowers the take it back to the hive.

Bees have wings. They have wings so they can make the honey thick. Average bees live in a hive. They live in the hive for six weeks. Bees work for the queen. They also follow her because she is big.

Drone bees do hard work. Drone bees are male bees.

All bees are vegetarian. Bees know there is nectar in flowers. They know because they can smell with their feet. New Zealand is lucky to have bees. We are lucky because bees can make honey for humans.

  3. You have all included some really interesting facts about bees in your writing, room 27. It's amazing to think they smell with their feet. I'm not sure I understood Luci's writing about bees beating their wings to make honey. I wonder if you could find out how long it takes for a honeycomb to be made...?
